Chromatography

Aim: To separate the different pigments from ink using chromatography

Hypothesis: When I put the paper with colour in the water I think that the colour will not be separated.

Method:

1- Draw a line across the filter paper in pencil, 5cm from the bottom.
2- Draw a colored dot in the center of the line.
3- Measure out 10mL of water and place it in the test tube.
4- Place the filter paper in the test tube and fold over the side. MAKE SURE THE PENCIL LINE IS NOT IN THE WATER.

5- Wait for 5minutes and observe the results

Result: The purple turn into 3 different colour which is pink, purple and blue. Black turn into 4 different colours, which are blue, purple, black and orange.

Discussion: The purple had three different colour because it has 3 pigments on it. The black had four colours on it which means that it has many pigment on it.

Conclusion: My hypothesis was wrong because the two colours
had seperated and turned into a different colour.
