Science Road Show 2.0.1.8

This Wednesday the 28 of November we went to the learning street at HHS to see a show about science. The show was fun because it taught us so many things we did not know about science and body. There was so many fun stuff to do there, the first thing I did was to match the seeds in order that we can eat, for example, cereal, corn, and other food that start from a seed and then turn to a yummy healthy food. They also explain to us that we have to read the instruction first before we do the experiment if we did not read the instructions we would probably not know what to do with it.

My favorite experiment was when I sat on the chair and I hold a bar that has weight in it so that I felt like I'm going to fall, after that they spin me and it felt like I was going to fall out of my chair. Luckily I have a seatbelt so I did not fall. I went with Vann, Axle, and Ranit so that I can get help when I don't know what it is.

I would like to try the Science Roadshow again next time because maybe they will have a new experiment to show us.

Stone curving

On Monday the 26 of November, I move on a different project. It is called a pikorua, pikorua meaning in Maori stands for the bond between two people. I always thought that stone curving is easy but then when I started doing It's like carving a hard sand in a table. When you are doing a big project you will probably get it done in about 3 to 6 hours.

Kamusta Emma!

Kamusta Emma,

My name is Lars I'm from Hornby High School. I would try to participate in the learning journey this year because I would like to win a Drone for my self. If you want to know more about me well "I like to play basketball and soccer with my friends and brothers". Also, my favorite subject is math, reading, and science. I also like to eat chicken from KFC. I would really like to win that price so I hope that I will have a good luck.

If I won in the summer learning journey I would really like to get a drone because I think it will be fun to make that drone fly.

Purple Cabbage Experiment

This Friday in science we made an experiment about cabbage. We use cabbage blended with water as an indicator. I really like science because you can do some fun stuff like making a volcano explode and more like just we did today.
Purple Cabbage Experiment
Last period in science we looked at the pH scale. Today we are going to make a purple cabbage indicator that will test the acidity or alkalinity of white vinegar and washing powder. The indicator is neutral and has a pH of 7.
Answer the following questions before you start the experiment.
What colour do you think white vinegar will turn the purple cabbage indicator? I think it might turn to colour red.
Why do you think it will turn to red? Because the vinegar is sour so maybe it will wash away the color and turn it to red.
What colour do you think white vinegar will turn the purple cabbage indicator? Still purple
Why do you think that? Because the washing powder is alkaline.
Method:
1 Peel off three or four big cabbage leaves and put them in a blender filled half full with water. Blend the mixture on high until you have purple cabbage juice.
2 Pour the purplish cabbage liquid through a strainer to filter out all of the big chunks of cabbage. Save the liquid for the experiments to follow.
3 Set out three beakers, side by side. Fill each glass three-quarters full with cabbage juice.
4 Add a little vinegar to the first beaker of cabbage juice. Stir with stirring rod and watch the colour change.
5 In the second beaker, add a little laundry detergent and stir.
6 Take a photo of your 3 beakers side by side.
Reflection:
Were your answers right or wrong? I only got 1 question right because the cabbage turns out colour red, green and I think red.
What number do you think the white vinegar would be on the pH scale? 3.0
What number do you think the washing powder would be on the pH scale? 8 / 9

What we have done today in passion project

Today in our passion project we have to make a design for our biggest stone. We also put a meaning on our project because the teacher said to us before we have to make our big stone there need to be a meaning on it. So we decided to put a meaning on it. The meaning of our project is me, Christian and jullien.

We also learned how to use all the stuff from the shed where we do our project. Some of the things that I can remember that we use is Tooth Chisel, Flat Chisel, Point Chisels, Mini Stone Chisels, Specialty Chisels, and Hammers. Also, the things that I remember to use is hammer it uses to help chisels and point chisel.

SLJ Practise Lets travel to Canada

"Salut a tous" today at cyber smart we have to choose a country for our summer learning journey. I would like to visit Canada because of the expanse of Canada's natural beauty, from mountains and glaciers to secluded lakes and forests, it is almost unparalleled worldwide. But Canada's allure is not just the great outdoors. Canada has cosmopolitan cities that are clean, safe, friendly, and multicultural.

Canada capital city is Ottawa, Ottawa is Canada’s capital cities, in the east of southern Ontario, near the city of Montreal and the U.S. border. Sitting on the Ottawa River, it has at its center Parliament Hill, with grand Victorian architecture and museums such as the National Gallery of Canada, with noted collections of indigenous and other Canadian art. Also, Canada is the second largest country in the world, the pollution of it is 36.71 million people.

January is the coldest weather in Canada because its temperature is 28f and because of that, the most daily sunshine is in July. The language most commonly spoken is  English and French.

Two fun facts about Canada: First Canada is the world educated country and the second facts are Canada has more lake than the rest o the world because all the lakes are all combined.

I like to go to Canada because I want to visit it.

Probabililty D L O

In maths at school, my group for maths needs to make a D L O about probability. We did that because that is what we are learning at maths this week. I supposed to finish this last week but then they said that we are going to have a project in kete called passion project and my topic was about stone carving.

Science

This week in science we did a Ph Scale quiz, It was very fun because we have to search the answer to Google. Some of the questions are hard but me and Vann my partner in science/friend did pretty well. Make sure to check out our Ph scale quiz because it will help you if you are doing scale quiz too.

Neutral solutions have a pH of  (7)

What colour represents neutral on the pH scale (Green)

What is the range covered by the pH scale (0-14)

pH is a measure of (Hydrogen  ions) Oxygen Hydrogen Hydroxide

Acids and bases can combine to create water and salts (True)

Which is not a property of a base Sour taste Bitter taste Slippery (Sour taste)

There are a variety of strengths of acids and bases True False (True)

Vinegar is an example of a Strong base Strong Acid Weak Acid (Weak acid)

An acid’s pH is between (0-14)

What is true when acids and bases neutralize each other; (They react to neutralize then the  acid and base properties will produce a salt.)

Who is Austin Post?

This week for cyber smart we have a task to research about search bar, natural result, and filters. We have a question about who is Austin Post. Then we have to search his name in the search bar, screenshot it and put a circle on it.

         Natural Result

Bonus question

How did Austin choose the name he is the best known by?

When post-Malone was 14 or 15. The name was rumored to be a reference to the professional basketball player Karl Malone, but Post later explained that while "Post" is his last name, he used a "rap name generator" to get "Malone".

Fish in a tree

This week we finally finish the book that we were reading called Fish in the tree. We have been reading fish in a tree since term 1 and we finally finish it. The character in fish in the tree is Ally Nickerson, Albert Keisha, Mr. Daniel, and Jesica Shay.  In the story, there was this girl that has dyslexia her name is Ally Nickerson. Ally was a nice girl but sometimes she gets bullied because of her dyslexia.

Fish in a tree is a good book, you should get the book that we just read because it's really incredible and awesome.

Science Experiment

This Friday in Science we did another amazing experiment It's called the Alchemy. But before we do the experiment our teacher said we need to put our safety goggles first and get all the equipment. About two minutes later we finish preparing the things that we need so we started doing the experiment. The experiment went well because the copper coin that we put in the beaker turn into some color of gold/silver. You always have to put your safety google on when you're doing this experiment because if you forget to wear your safety goggles your eye will get damaged by the fire.

Alchemy

I was aiming to find out how to turn a copper coin into gold.

Equipment:

  • Copper Coin
  • Bunsen burner
  • Tripod
  • Heat Mat
  • Gauze mat
  • 50ml beaker
  • Scissor Tongs
  • Zinc metal
  • Zinc Nitrate solution

Orana Park Visit

Yesterday the 18th of September the whole year 7 went to the coolest zoo in Christchurch. It was fun because we got to see some of the native animals of New Zealand. Some animals are almost extinct because of the pollution that is happening on earth. If we keep our pollution clean and safe our animals on earth will stay safe until something bad happens to us. “ I'm going to tell you what HIPPO stands for, H- Habitat loss, I- Introduced species, P- Pollution, P- Population growth and O- Over exploitation”.

My favorite animal that I saw in the Orana Wildlife Park is the Zebra because “did you know if you look at the zebra their stripes are not the same because they are all unique. If you look at our fingerprint it not same as the other people because if we have the same fingerprint we can't hold each other accountable. Also zebra are born black and then develop their white stripes.

Some facts about the animals in the Orana Wildlife Park……

  • Giraffes tongue changed color so it doesn't get sunburnt.
  • Rhino horn is made out of the same stuff as our hair and toenails.
  • Kiwi has strong legs to kick predators. Their legs aren’t hollow like birds who fly.
  • Cheetah needs to rest after they hunt and sometimes their food gets stolen by lions or hyenas.
  • Chocolate is toxic to Kea. Make sure you put them off your car before you drive.
  • Tasmanian Devils are marsupials and carry their babies in their pouches. Only the strongest 4 would survive because the mum only has 4 teets to feed on.
  • A male Lion's roar can be heard from up to five miles away and it is also the loudest roar of any big cat species.
  • The oldest ape is dominant and the young ape must give whatever he wants.
  • Cheetah is the only large cat that can purr.
  • Spider monkey uses their tail to support their balance.
  • Female kiwi is larger to carry the eggs. They have no tail and their wings are underdeveloped.
  • Tigers live alone and spray to mark their territory.

  • Spider monkeys have a thumbprint on their tail.

Ice, Match And Salt Experiment

In science, we did another cool experiment. The name of the experiment is called the ice experiment because we used ice and a match. Science is always fun because of the experiments.

What Happened?

What happens is the ice and the salt together makes the ice dissolve.

If you put salt, a little stick and ice together you put a little bit of salt on the match and the match should stick to the ice and the ice should come up with the matchstick. Also, some groups were trying to make it but they took almost 20 minutes. Our group was the first one to do the experiment I think we followed the instructions. If you don't follow the instructions it will not work.

What do you need:

A bowl of cold water

A matchstick

An ice cube

Table salt

Instructions:

Place the ice cube carefully in the bowl of cold water

Gently place the match lengthwise on top of the ice and try to lift the ice cube

Put the matchstick back on the ice and sprinkle a little salt along the line where it touches the ice cube

Wait for 30 seconds and then attempt to pick up the ice cube again

Why do we sprinkle salt on icy roads? Because the salt makes the ice melt faster to lower the freezing.

Science Experiment (Elephant toothpaste)

In science we did a experiment for elephant toothpaste. It's fun because you can see the bubble going up. Science is fun because you can do some fun experiment but it can also be dangerous.

Elephant’s Toothpaste

Resources:

Safety glasses

A cylinder

Rubber gloves

A tote tray to protect the bench from damage

120ml Hydrogen Peroxide 6%

Dishwash liquid

Dry yeast ,,

Food colouring

Funnel

Tablespoon

Beaker

Procedure:

Put on your gloves and goggles.

Put a tote tray on the bench and put your cylinder in the tote tray, with the funnel in the top.

Ask the teacher to pour the hydrogen peroxide into your cylinder (via the funnel).

Add 10 drops of food colouring to the cylinder (via the funnel).

Add a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid to the bottle (via the funnel).

Swirl your cylinder around to mix everything together.

In a beaker, mix a tablespoon of dry yeast with 3 tablespoons of warm water and stir for 30 seconds.

Pour the yeast mixture into the cylinder (via the funnel).

Stand back and watch the chemical reaction!

Pour the mixture down the drain afterwards and wash out the cylinder.

Scientific Explanation (How it works):

The yeast and water mixture acts as a catalyst - something that speeds up a chemical reaction in another substance, while remaining unchanged itself. When you add this to the cylinder it makes the hydrogen peroxide break down into oxygen and water. "Also the toothpaste almost explode out of the cylinder".

Is your cylinder warm after the experiment? Why? Yes, because when you mix all the chemical it will make it warm enough so you can't touch it.

Testing for Simple Sugar

This Friday in science we've done a science experiment called Benedict Test. It is fun because we have to light a Bunsen burner to make the sugar change colors. And here is some photo down below how the sugar change.

Testing for Simple Sugars (Benedict's Test)

Aim

I want to find out how to test for simple sugars.

Simple sugars are carbohydrates that are quickly absorbed by the body to produce energy.

They are also classified as “simple” because they contain only one or two units of sugar or saccharine.

Also referred to as simple carbohydrates, these sugars are found naturally in a variety of foods that we consume daily.

www.livestrong.com

Equipment

Safety glasses

Bunsen burner

Test tubes

Test tube tongs

Benedict's Solution

Food sample

Method

Place about 2 mL of the food sample into a test tube and then add 5 drops of Benedict's solution and 5 ml of water
Gently heat the test tube over a blue flame. DO NOT BOIL!

Results

A positive test for simple sugar results in Benedict's Solution changing from a blue color to a yellow color to an orange/red color.

Conclusion

When we put the food coloring in the test tube it was blue then when put it on the fire it started to get change color.

Extra for experts

Two different types of sugar exist: simple and complex. Complex sugar takes longer for your body to break down and is healthier for your body. This type is found in natural carbohydrates such as whole grains and fruit. On the other hand, simple sugar is broken down by your body quickly and causes energy ups and downs. This type of sugar includes refined and processed sugar found in table sugar and added to many sweets. Consuming an excess of simple sugar comes with numerous health problems

www.livestrong.com

Give two examples of simple sugars and complex sugars in your daily food? Complex sugar is Pea and Bean, simple sugar is milk and dairy foods.

At what times of the day may you need simple sugars? Sport

Do you think that it would be wise to eat simple sugars before bed? Why/why not? No, because it will be hard to sleep with all those sugar.
