Orana Park Visit

Yesterday the 18th of September the whole year 7 went to the coolest zoo in Christchurch. It was fun because we got to see some of the native animals of New Zealand. Some animals are almost extinct because of the pollution that is happening on earth. If we keep our pollution clean and safe our animals on earth will stay safe until something bad happens to us. “ I'm going to tell you what HIPPO stands for, H- Habitat loss, I- Introduced species, P- Pollution, P- Population growth and O- Over exploitation”.

My favorite animal that I saw in the Orana Wildlife Park is the Zebra because “did you know if you look at the zebra their stripes are not the same because they are all unique. If you look at our fingerprint it not same as the other people because if we have the same fingerprint we can't hold each other accountable. Also zebra are born black and then develop their white stripes.

Some facts about the animals in the Orana Wildlife Park……

  • Giraffes tongue changed color so it doesn't get sunburnt.
  • Rhino horn is made out of the same stuff as our hair and toenails.
  • Kiwi has strong legs to kick predators. Their legs aren’t hollow like birds who fly.
  • Cheetah needs to rest after they hunt and sometimes their food gets stolen by lions or hyenas.
  • Chocolate is toxic to Kea. Make sure you put them off your car before you drive.
  • Tasmanian Devils are marsupials and carry their babies in their pouches. Only the strongest 4 would survive because the mum only has 4 teets to feed on.
  • A male Lion's roar can be heard from up to five miles away and it is also the loudest roar of any big cat species.
  • The oldest ape is dominant and the young ape must give whatever he wants.
  • Cheetah is the only large cat that can purr.
  • Spider monkey uses their tail to support their balance.
  • Female kiwi is larger to carry the eggs. They have no tail and their wings are underdeveloped.
  • Tigers live alone and spray to mark their territory.

  • Spider monkeys have a thumbprint on their tail.

I really liked your post about Orana Park! I have never been and I was so envious that the Year 7's got to go visit all the animals. I learned a lot about zebras from your blog post.

I think I will have to visit Orana Park sometime soon!
