Making a Metal Oxide

Aim: To make a metal oxide and observe the difference in properties of the product compared to the reactant.

Equipment:

  • A piece of magnesium
  • Bunsen burner
  • Safety glasses
  • Metal Scissor tongs

Method:

  1. Light your bunsen burner
  2. Hold your piece of magnesium in the scissor tongs. Ensure you are holding onto the very tip of the magnesium.
  3. Place the other end of the magnesium into the Bunsen flame (at the top of the blue flame)
  4. When the magnesium begins to burn, do not look directly at it, as the light emitted can permanently damage your eyes.

Result:

Discussion: After we have covered the gas hole in the bunsen burner, the fire has changed to the colour blue which means it is really hot. We then hold the magnesium with the scissor tongs and put it right above the blue flame. In a very quick second, the magnesium started to burn while giving the effect of very bright light, while the magnesium is burning make sure to not look directly at it because it can forever damage your eye.

Conclusion: What I think about the experiment that we did, is that it was really fun. I had a lot of fun doing the experiment and I'm looking forward to our next science experiment.

Metal and Acids

Aim: To show that hydrogen gas is produced when a metal reacts with acid.

Equipment:

  • A test tube
  • A boiling tube
  • Bunsen burner
  • Wooden splint
  • A bottle of acid
  • A piece of metal
  • Safety glasses
Method:
  1. Add your sample of metal to your test tube. Add 2 mL of acids.
  2. Carefully invert the boiling tube above the test tube containing the metal and acid.
  3. Hold the test tubes together for a few minutes, allowing time for the inverted boiling tube to fill with gas.
  4. Light the flaming splint with a lighter.
  5. Carefully, but quickly, tilt the boiling tube full of gas upwards and insert the burning splint into the mouth of the test tube.
Result:

As the result, the sound that we heard was "pop!".

Test for Gases - Elevise

Discussion:

As the metal is dissolving with the acids we quickly put the other test tube above it so that it won't release any Hydrogen gas. The more we wait for all the H2 to get trap in the tube, we see that it's becoming more grey, which means it is realising H2 ( Hydrogen gas). After a few minutes, we then call our teacher to light our splint, when the splint was on fire we quickly turn over the test tube and put the burning splint inside. The sound that it made was a loud "POP"!.

Conclusion:

I can tell that our experiment works because of the way the test tube made a sound. Maybe next time we will try to cover the tube so that the H2 won't scape, and also the sound will even be louder than we did last time. But anyway I like that experiment.

My School Holiday

On the two weeks holidays of school, I mostly did nothing for a week. Then on the second week of the holidays, my family and I went to lake Tekapo and stay there for one night. While I was there I enjoyed the view of the lake, at night you can feel the cold wind passing through you. Before the sun came down I went to the playground and just watch the sunset. At night I made my self a hot chocolate and just sit outside until 10:00 pm. I can hear the wave of the ocean crashing and splashing, it was so relaxing that time at Lake Tekapo.

Then after we came back from Lake Tekapo, 3 days until school. We went on a long drive to The Giant house it took us 1 hr and 19 mins to get. The first thing that I saw when I have arrive was the sculpture, the stairs were made from mosaic sculptures. As I go inside the giant house, I saw more whimsical mosaic sculptures, my favourite pieces of art that I saw there was the giraffe.

In the last few days of my school holiday, I just took a nap and played a little bit on my phone. I also went to the park and play basketball with some of my friends. And that was mostly my school Holidays.

Anti-Vietnam war song

This week in social study our task was to blog about 1 of the Anti-Vietnam war song. We have to select a song that we need to research. We then need to write about the song and put some description onto it. We have to explain what was the message of the song that was written.

Title of the song: Give Peace a Chance by John Lennon

What was the song about? The meaning of the song was to stop the war and have peace. John Lennon who was once a Beatle member wrote this song because he wanted the world to hear that we don't need war, all we need is peace and love. He has created this song because the world need to stop fighting and give peace a chance. The way John Lennon and and Ono's way to protesting is by staying in bed to promote peace by staying in bed.

Perspectives Of The Beatles Tours

                            Perspectives Of The Beatles Tour

The Beatles New Zealand Tour 1964

Perspective 1- For Tour:

My perspective about the people who are for the tour is that they are mostly teenagers who are obsessed with the Beatles. They probably like the Beatles because their song relates to everything in the world like relationships and other more things. Not like the song in their past generation they only talk about things like animal or plants. A batch of a teenage girl like the Beatles song because they can most relate to the song that the Beatles make.

Perspective 2 - Against Tour

In my opinion, the people who are against the Beatles don't like their song, or maybe they don't like the Beatles because of their kids getting obsessed with them. Some New Zealanders who were against the Beatles thought that it was based on religious, traditional views who saw the Beatles leading youth to sin and troublemaking. A bunch of people who are against the tour are mostly parents, they didn't like the song because it talks about relationships and things, unlike their past melody it just talks about animal or plants.

Let it be - The Beatles

Title of the songs:  Let it be

What was the song about: Let it be was the Beatles last album, it was an appropriate song that leaves problems and moving in life. The album that they had made was supposed to send an entirely different message. The titles supposed to have been "Get Back" and they were going to record it in front of an audience on live TV, with another TV special showing them practising the songs in the studio. Let it be was a message from her mother that said let it be. John Lenon wanted to make the groups back but suddenly he had a dream about his mother saying just "Let it be".

How different does it sound to music from 1940? The Beatles sound different to 1940's songs because Beatle create a song that reflects on things that relate to us. The group Beatles has a different style from any other band at the time. Beatles worked in many different genres of music. The group started rooted in Skiffle and 1950's rock and roll, and later on the year it has expands into pop ballads, psychedelic rock and also having some classical influences in their songs.

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness, she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be, be
And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me
Shinin' until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom let it be
And let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom let it be
